FILMMAKER SHOWCASE

Malia Romero

Malia

Malia Romero, 15, currently attends Sand Creek High School in the Falcon School District of Colorado Springs where she is a junior.

For her film project, HELPLESS, Malia courageously explored the topic of schizophrenia and how her step-brother’s recent diagnosis has impacted their entire family. Her willingness to delve deeply into sensitive questions, explore those questions intimately with her family, and present the material in a thoughtful and beautiful way, suggest that Malia’s skills in documentary storytelling will serve her very well in the future.

HELPLESS premiered at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in November, 2013.  Malia was also invited to present her work with undergraduate students at the Colorado College where she shared stories about her filmmaking experiences.  Malia hopes to attend a private four-year college and then obtain a master’s degree in math, computer science and/or filmmaking.

Learning how to make documentaries also taught me how to have a different kind of conversation with my own family members.  Talking about things made them less hard.
