William J. Sobolik

_DSC8569William J. Sobolik, 18, recently graduated from CIVA Arts Academy where he began cultivating his interest in filmmaking and digital arts. Will’s experience as a filmmaker, especially cinematography, began early on: his mom was a videographer for local television.

Will’s interest in filmmaking is also matched by his passion for music, especially local music.  For his YDA film project, THE OPENING ACT, he profiles three local musicians – a flutist, an industrial heavy metal band, and a singer/songwriter – who although very different in style, are all three equally driven to create a life of music and performance.

The film explores how musicians define success, especially with the challenges of making a living in a highly competitive field. THE OPENING ACT premiered at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and has been invited to play at the Colorado Springs Downtown Celebration & Rocky Mountain State Game Opening Ceremony

Will currently attends Pikes Peak Community College where he received a scholarship to study visual and graphic arts.

One thing I love about YDA is how collaborative it is. Working with other kids who are very different from me, I’ve learned a lot.
